Terms of Service
Version 1.0 · Effective 2026-05-20
These Terms govern your use of FamilyBot. By creating an account or accepting an invitation to join a family on FamilyBot, you agree to these Terms.
What FamilyBot is
FamilyBot is a private chat application for individual families. Each family has its own space, controlled by the family's admins. There is no public profile, no follower count, no algorithm-curated feed, no advertising, and no exposure to strangers. The product is designed for cross-generational sharing — children, elders, and everyone in between — within the explicit, family-administered boundary.
Acceptable use
You may not use FamilyBot to:
- Harass, threaten, defame, or impersonate any person.
- Post content that is unlawful in the jurisdiction where you or the recipient is located.
- Spam other family members or use the platform for commercial promotion without explicit permission from FamilyBot during the preview.
- Attempt to compromise the security or integrity of the service (e.g., probing for vulnerabilities without authorization, scraping at scale, attempting to access another family's data).
- Use the platform to circumvent legal restrictions on contact (e.g., restraining orders, custody orders).
- Upload content that infringes someone else's intellectual property without permission.
Family admins are responsible for the conduct of users they invite into their family. FamilyBot reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.
Content ownership
You retain ownership of everything you contribute to your family's space — your messages, photos, audio, PDFs, contributions, and tree edits. By using FamilyBot you grant us a limited license to store, process, transmit, and display your content as needed to operate the service. This license ends when you delete your account.
We do not claim ownership over your family's content. We do not use it to train AI models. We do not sell it to third parties. See the Privacy Policy for details on sub-processors.
Account responsibilities
You are responsible for keeping your sign-in method (email + magic link) secure. If you suspect unauthorized access, email cfrln@cfrln.com immediately.
If you create or accept invitations on behalf of a minor (under 18), you affirm that you are the minor's parent or legal guardian. Misrepresenting guardianship is a violation of these Terms and may carry legal consequences in your jurisdiction. See the Privacy Policy for how minor accounts are handled.
Account termination
- You may close your account at any time by visiting /me/data and clicking "Delete my account." Deletion proceeds within 30 days. See the Privacy Policy for what is deleted versus anonymized.
- We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, that we reasonably believe are compromised, or where required by law. We will attempt to notify you and offer a chance to remediate when possible.
- Family-admin removal — a family admin may revoke a member's access to the family at any time. Removed members lose access to the family's space immediately; their contributions remain in the family's record per the Privacy Policy.
Service availability and changes
FamilyBot is in early preview. The service may have downtime, bugs, and missing features. We make no guarantees of uninterrupted availability during the preview.
We may add, change, or remove features. Material changes that affect your rights or how the service handles your data will be communicated in advance with a chance to acknowledge or, if you disagree, to delete your account before the change takes effect.
Limitation of liability
FamilyBot is provided "as is" during the preview. To the maximum extent permitted by law, FamilyBot and its operators are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, revenue, or business arising from your use of the service. Our aggregate liability to you for direct damages is limited to the greater of the fees you have paid for FamilyBot in the past 12 months (zero during the preview) and one hundred US dollars.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by applicable law (for example, gross negligence or willful misconduct under certain jurisdictions).
Dispute resolution
We hope you never need this section. If you have a dispute, please email cfrln@cfrln.com first and we will work to resolve it informally. If we can't, disputes will be governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, and submitted to the courts of San Francisco County, California — except where applicable consumer-protection law in your jurisdiction requires otherwise.
For users in the European Union, nothing in these Terms removes your right to bring proceedings in the courts of your country of residence as a consumer.
Modifications
We may update these Terms. The CURRENT_POLICY_VERSION constant in the application is bumped whenever the substantive terms change. On a bump, you will be required to acknowledge the new version at /me/consent before continuing to use FamilyBot. Continued use after a bump constitutes acceptance.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles, except where applicable consumer-protection law in your jurisdiction requires otherwise.
